A Contrastive Study of Rhetorical Devices in Film Titles in English and Vietnamses

Abstract

This paper is aimed to examine some rhetorical devices that are commonly used in film titles in English and Vietnamese. And then, pointing out their similarities, differences and their frequencies of occurrence in English and Vietnamese film titles. The data of the thesis were taken from film websites in English and Vietnamese. 200 samples (100 samples in English and 100 samples in Vietnamese) are collected to support the process of the investigation. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed to analyze the data. Based on the comparative analysis, the findings of this work could show some rhetorical devices in English and Vietnamese film titles like metaphor, metonymy, simile, personification, and rhetorical questions. With the hope to partly contribute to the better awareness of teachers and learners as well as those who want to do in film industry later. Specifically, this paper gives both Vietnamese and English learners chances for rhetorical devices enhancement. For the teachers, they could get more experiences for their careers. Moreover, people who desire to begin their jobs as film makers also benefit a lot from this thesis as they would be able to find background information related to film making in this thesis.
